A Northerner with a vision for the South marked the beginning of a Georgia community that later would bear his name. It was 1893 and Indianapolis attorney, P.H. Fitzgerald, envisioned a colony in the South where aging Union veterans could escape the rigors of Northern winters. Through a unique land offer, Union soldiers could homestead five to forty acre tracts. But the colony went beyond even Fitzgerald's original dream. It so became a destination for Confederate veterans.
Fitzgerald is rich in its diversity of business and industry. Four manufacturers of cargo haulers, Coachmen Industries, a manufacturer of recreational travel trailers and three plastics manufacturers call thisc ommunity home. Alongside traditional agribusiness and textile firms are producersof emerging technologies like Cenergie Corporation. Cenergie makes fuel cells, one of the most promising environmentally friendly energy sources.
