The Community of Cordele
In 1923 a group of forward-thinking citizens dreamed of a way to harness the power of the Flint River. They envisioned a hydroelectric plant to energize their community. In August of 1930 the vision became reality. The Crisp County Power Commission's hydroelectric plant became the first county-owned electric system in the U.S. and today offers some of the most competitive electric rates in the state to residences and businesses.
Manufacturing, distribution and the service industry comprise 60 percent of the economy.
Success for Crisp County goes beyond even what the early leaders imagined in 1930. They didn't foresee a recreational destination that draws thousands of visitors to its banks for fishing, boating and lakeside living. Lake Blackshear, an 8,700-acre reservoir stretching 20 miles along the Flint River created by the hydroelectric dam, increases the quality of life for its inhabitants and a boon to tourism dollars.
